Drone Thermography: High-Precision Aerial Thermal Inspections

Drone Thermography: High-Precision Aerial Thermal Inspections

Aerial thermography with drones combines the flexibility of UAV flight with the power of infrared cameras to detect thermal anomalies invisible to the naked eye. This non-destructive testing (NDT) technique allows for the rapid inspection of large surfaces—roofs, facades, photovoltaic systems, district heating networks—providing precise, georeferenced data ready for technical analysis.

IR Camera Certificates

We use radiometric thermal cameras calibrated with a thermal sensitivity of < 50 mK for high-precision surveys.

Rapid Inspections

We cover hundreds of photovoltaic modules or thousands of m² of surface area in a single flight session.

Thermographic Reports

Each inspection includes a report with annotated IR images, delta-T, anomaly classification, and recommendations.

IEC compliance

Our inspections follow the IEC 62446-3 standards for photovoltaic systems and the UNI standards for construction.

Work process

1. Technical Briefing

Site analysis, definition of optimal flight conditions (irradiance, ambient delta-T), and mission planning.

2. Thermographic Flight

Simultaneous acquisition of RGB and radiometric IR images with a drone equipped with a calibrated thermal camera.

3. Data Analysis

Thermographic image processing, identification and classification of anomalies with dedicated software.

4. Report and Delivery

Technical report with annotated images, georeferenced anomaly map, and intervention recommendations.

FAQ

When is the best time for a thermographic inspection?

For photovoltaics, during the central hours with irradiation > 600 W/m². For buildings, during transition seasons (spring/autumn) with a delta-T > 10°C between indoors and outdoors.

Is the report valid for warranties or insurance purposes?

Yes, our reports follow IEC and UNI standards and are signed by certified thermographers, suitable for insurance claims and product warranties.

How many photovoltaic modules are you able to inspect in a day?

It depends on the system configuration, but typically between 500 and 2,000 modules per working day.

Do you also work on large utility-scale plants?

Yes, we have drones with extended battery life and we handle ENAC authorizations for flights over large areas.

Can thermography replace visual inspection?

It complements and enhances it: we always provide RGB photographic documentation in parallel with IR images.
